Typically when you think of Tumeric, you think of a vibrant orange spice used for cooking.  Tumeric is actually jam packed with nutrients and wellness benefits and it's our new favorite go to in the beauty category.   With super high antioxidant levels, this little dream machine can slow down cell damage and it’s also anti-inflammatory.  Studies have even shown that curcumin, a chemical compound found in turmeric, can decrease UV damage and clear up acne when applied to skin. 

Read on for some of our favorite ways to add it to your daily routine:

Treatment: Acne

What it is: For acne-prone skin, we love this DIY Turmeric Acne Mask recipe because it quickly calms, clears, and minimizes breakouts in addition to helping clear your pores which will result in fewer breakouts.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - A pinch of ground turmeric 
 - 1 tbsp. mashed ripe banana

Apply to clean skin and leave on for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

Treatment: AntI-Aging

What it is: Turmeric, ginger and maca combine for a beauty-boosting energy smoothie in this Anti-Aging Coconut Tumeric Smoothie by Shannon Vaughn at Pursoma.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1 cup help or coconut milk
 - 1 tbsp. coconut oil
 - 1 frozen banana
 - 1/2 cup frozen pineapple 
 - 1/2 tsp. tumeric 
 - 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
 - 1/2 tsp. ginger                                                                                         
 - 1 tsp. maca powder                                                                             
 - 1 tsp. chia seeds

Blend all ingredients until smooth.  

Treatment: Uneven complexion

What it is: Minimize dark spots, pigmentation, and melasma with this Homemade Glycolic Acid Mask.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1 tsp. jaggery powder (or dark brown sugar)
 - 1 tsp. tomato juice

 - 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
 - 1/8 tsp. tumeric powder
 - Warm green tea to turn to paste.

Mix all ingredients well and apply to your skin. Wash off after 12 to 15 minutes.

Treatment: Dry skin

What it is: Hydrate your skin naturally with this Egg Yolk Hydrating Mask With Tumeric

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1 egg yolk
 - 1 pinch tumeric

 - 1 tsp. olive oil

Mix yolk, turmeric and oil together to make a paste. Apply to the face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Treatment: Puffiness

What it is: Turmeric has been known to be helpful in treating inflammation - Ingesting it in powdered or pill form helps to debloat the body and you can achieve the same soothing natural anti-inflammatory effect when you apply it onto your skin. Your skin will be bright and depuffed after this Soothing and Depuffing Tumeric Mask.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1 tbsp. organic Greek yogurt
 - 1/2 tsp. tumeric
 - 1 tsp. finely chopped parsley

Mix all ingredients together and leave on for 10 minutes. Remove with a warm cloth.

Treatment: Dull dry skin

What it is: I know the idea of soaking in an orange tub sounds terrifying, but we promise it will be well worth it for how amazing your skin will look after a Turmeric Bath.  Note, this will temporarily stain a white bath yellow - you can scrub it with bleach and it will remove the stain.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1/2 cup tumeric powder

Light some candles, fill up your tub with warm water, and toss in half a cup of turmeric powder. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.

Treatment: Dandruff and dull hair

What it is: In need of an all-natural conditioning treatment that helps keep your hair healthy and treats a host of scalp conditions, especially dandruff?  This Turmeric & Olive Oil Hair Conditioner is our go-to for a DIY hair savior.

Ingredients & Directions:  

 - 1 tbsp. olive oil
 - 1/2 tsp. tumeric

Add turmeric to olive oil and massage the mixture into your scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse it with a natural (read: surfactant-free) shampoo.
